My Second Tesla Coil

from my second tesla coil.

Tesla Coil, new primary     This was my new primary.  Way too wide.  I made it out of 50 feet of 3/8 inch copper tubing.  It had 8.5 turns, 8 inch inner radius, and a 14 inch outer radius.  The total inductance was about 50 uh.  There is a one foot ruler laying inside of the coil.  The red spool was 2500 feet of 20 awg magnet wire.  I used the wire to wind two new 6" secondarys.  My 100 kv 0.01 uf capacitor is in the bottom right of the picture.  The white supports are 3/8 inch thick poly.  I drilled holes in the poly for the plastic ties.  They held the copper tubing in place.  I bought the copper tubing from Home Depot and the plastic ties from our local electric store.  Primary construction time 2 hours and 30 minutes.  G, I was slow.
Tesla Coil, new primary with old secondary    This was my new primary with my first secondary.   Now since I have finished my new secondary the question is who do I give my old coil to?  As a side note.  I took out a rotary saw and chopped it in half.  I use it now as my RF chokes. :)
Tesla COil, new secondary and primary     This is my new secondary with my new primary.  Its about 700 turns of 20 awg magnet wire.  It took me about 2 hours to wind it.  Still slow.  I placed a coke can in the picture for a idea of its size (yes its A&W).  Its hard to see but I do have a strike rail.  Later I removed the strike rail because of excess hits from the toriod.
Tesla Coil, secondary construction     This is my crude setup for winding.   You can see my old secondary in the background to give you a idea of the new secondary's size.  Its hand wound.  Took me about 2 hours for the first one and 45 minutes for the second.  Notice my paper weights.  About 20 joules each.  When doing this I recommend some music and a nice big cold drink.  The secondary windings are 25 inches long.  The PVC is 30 inches long and 6.5 inches wide.   Inductance 20 mh.  Frequency 300 khz, with toriod 200 khz.  I am planning to run theses 180 degrees out of phase.
Tesla Coil, RQG    This was my new spark gap.  Its like a Richard Quick style gap (RQG) but on a flat surface instead of in a PVC tube.  The gap had 10 electrodes.  The electrodes were 7/8 inch copper tubing and were 6 inches long.  Total gap distance about 0.75 inches.  The white platform is a poly cutting board.  Since I started using this gap my streamers increased 50% in length and are much brighter.  This gap took me about 90 minutes to make and works great!
